开元通宝是唐代铸造的一种铜质货币，钱币在唐代始有“通宝”。唐初沿用隋五铢，轻小淆杂。唐高祖武德四年（公元621年），为整治混乱的币制，废隋钱，效仿西汉五铢的严格规范，开铸“开元通宝”，取代社会上遗存的五铢。唐代以前的钱币，多以形制或重量为名称，如刀币、五铢钱等，而自开元钱后，改称“宝”、“通宝”、“元宝”等。开元通宝是唐朝统治290年中的主要流通货币，而且影响了中国1000多年钱币的形制、钱文模式和十进位衡法；另外，日本、越南、朝鲜钱制也受到开元通宝的影响，而通宝的称谓一直延用至近代。
开元通宝的命名，与南北朝时期以至隋唐之际盛行的道教文化有很大干系。先说“开元”二字。南北朝时期成书的道教经典有《太上老君开天经》。按照道教教义，远古创世纪经历了诸劫，凡五个劫号，其中便有“开皇”。开者，开劫度人之意。北朝道教经典又有《度人经》，专讲道教诸位尊神开劫度人之理。元者，道经讲“洪元”，为道教创世纪的第一大世纪，洪元经万劫又有混元。《云笈七签》卷三说：“寻道家经诰，起自三元”。即“混动太无元，赤混太无元，冥寂玄通元”。“开元”二字合释则有开劫创始超度众生的寓意。“通宝”二字，道藏有洞真诸经，通、洞在道藏中互用，洞即通，真即宝。“洞真”谓通向真仙之道，此亦通宝一语暗含影射之意。故“开元通宝”制词，除显性意义外，尚有隐性意义层面存在。不管是哪种解释，其用意不外是为了迎合高祖心理，既能借此让其崇道盛举，沟通与道教诸神君的感应，得以长生久视，长治久安。

The name of the Kaiyuan Tongbao, and the North and South Dynasties period to the Sui and Tang dynasties prevailing Taoist culture has a lot to do. First of all, “kaiyuan” two words. 近期我公司征集到一枚光背寄郭大字版开元通宝，典藏重量3.8g，直径12.5mm 。钱文笔划疏朗，纤细清秀，面文“开元通宝”四字自上及右回环读之，“开”字较宽，内部的“井”部与内廓相连。“元”字首横加长，次划左挑，“通”字的“辶”前三笔为似连非连的顿折状。“甬”部上笔开口较扁，“寳”字之“贝”部内中间两横与左右两竖笔近乎相衔接。“宀”下的“尔”为三个竖道。开元通宝钱币的铸造是我国古代制币史上的一大进步，它创立了通宝钱体制，规定了货币的法定重量，对我国古代衡法制度产生了重要影响；还规定了铜钱的成色以及配料的比列，甚至在丝绸之路上发挥过国际货币的功能，可以被视为我国货币发展进程中的第三个里程碑。开元通宝不仅在我国古代货币发展中占据了重要的意义，且在整个东亚地区也曾经产生了重要影响。很多国家不但流通使用开元通宝钱，还直接模仿开元通宝钱，其影响超越了国界。
